Originaire de La Havane, Julio Arozarena se forme à l’École nationale d’art de Cuba, d’où il sort diplôme en tant que danseur et professeur en 1983. Cette même année, il intègre le Ballet national de Cuba dirigé par Alicia Alonso et deviendra, cinq ans plus tard, danseur principal de cette compagnie.
Plusieurs fois lauréat lors des concours internationaux, sa carrière de danseur l’amène à quitter Cuba pour rejoindre l’Europe, d’abord en Belgique, au Ballet Royal des Flandres, puis en Suisse. En 1993, il intègre le célèbre Béjart Ballet Lausanne pour une période de 4 ans.
Après un passage en tant que chorégraphe pour compagnie équestre Zingaro à Paris, et l’Opéra de Nice comme maître de ballet, il réintègre le BBL dans cette même fonction, aux côtés de Maurice Béjart puis de Gil Roman, de 2006 à 2019.
Parallèlement à sa carrière de danseur et de pédagogue, Julio développe une passion et des compétences reconnues pour la chorégraphie. Il initie le projet artistique « L’air de rien » à Bruxelles en 2002, et crée notamment pour le Béjart Ballet Lausanne, le Ballet de Cuba et l’Opéra de Riga. En 2019, sa veine chorégraphique l’enjoint à se lancer comme chorégraphe et pédagogue indépendant. Arozarena Arts Association et la compagnie Julio Arozarena voient le jour, avec pour objectif de soutenir sa création chorégraphique, promouvoir le dialogue entre les arts et proposer des événements et formations centrées sur une vision métissée de l’art et de la création.
Entre février et juillet 2021, Julio a été directeur artistique par intérim de l’École-Atelier Rudra Béjart Lausanne et a créé dans ce cadre le spectacle « Études », présenté dans plusieurs festivals de danse à l’été 2021. Il est l’un des maîtres de ballet à qui la Fondation M. Béjart confie la transmission de son répertoire.
Born in Havana, Julio Arozarena trained at Cuba’s National School of Art, graduating as a dancer and teacher in 1983. That same year, he joined the National Ballet of Cuba, directed by Alicia Alonso, and five years later became one of the company’s principal dancers.
After being awarded several prestigious prizes in international competitions, his dancing career led him to leave Cuba for Europe, first in Belgium with the Ballet Royal des Flandres, then in Switzerland. In 1993, he joined the renowned Béjart Ballet Lausanne for 4 years.
After a spell as choreographer for the equestrian company Zingaro in Paris, and the Opéra de Nice as ballet master, he returned to the BBL in the same role, working alongside Maurice Béjart and then Gil Roman, from 2006 to 2019.
Alongside his career as a dancer and teacher, Julio has developed a passion and recognized skills for choreography. He initiated the artistic project “L’air de rien” in Brussels in 2002, and has choreographed for the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the National Ballet of Cuba and the Riga Opera. In 2019, his choreographic vein led him to set up as an independent choreographer and teacher. The Arozarena Arts Association and the Julio Arozarena Company were created, with the aim of supporting his choreographic creation, promoting dialogue between the arts and offering events and training with focus on a mixed vision of art and creation.
Between February and July 2021, Julio was interim artistic director of the École-Atelier Rudra Béjart Lausanne, where he created the show “Études”, which will be presented at several dance festivals in the summer of 2021. He is one of the ballet masters to whom the M. Béjart Foundation entrusts the transmission of its repertoire.
